K-one born Kevin Scrubbs on May 20, 1969 in Port of Spain, Trinidad,
West Indies was born to mother Graceline Scrubbs and father Michael Brown. 38 year old Kevin was born into a family of musicians. His father was a singer/songwriter and his uncle Bunny Brown has been the police calypso competition champion for two years. Another uncle plays the saxophone professionally in England. Also on his mother’s side, he
has an uncle Evrol Moses who is a percussionist. His older cousin Alan Blake taught him how to play the drums. Alan Blake is also a singer/songwriter, a minister of music and works prominent in the church with young people and various choirs.
K-one has been into music from the age of eight, performing in teen concerts and talent shows. He went on to perform in the junior church choir at a local church called Deliverance Temple with the Reverend Michael Lewis where he spent most of his younger years. During his teen years he became rebellious. He strayed from the church, ran with the wrong crowd and began doing his own thing. He spent some of his teenage years running the streets and hustling as a gang member. He saw a lot of his close friends and family die on the streets. He himself has encountered near death experiences. Those experiences made him reevaluate his life and seek his true purpose in life which eventually lead him back to God. Soon he became a youth minister at a local church where he was mentored and guided spiritually by Reverend Margaret Lee, the pastor of the local church. Pastor Lee was responsible for the birthing and nurturing of his music ministry.
Being a young man from the streets K-one believed that he owed it to God to be a servant and to help the young people that society had given up on because he was once one of them. He understood firsthand that all they needed was someone to show them that they cared and to let them know that God has a purpose and a plan for their lives. This path took K-one to places like Venezuela, St Vincent, Guyana, and the United States where he would share his testimony with young men and women to let them know that they are not alone and that if God could do it for him, he can do it for them also, for he made us all equal. K-one has had opportunities to visit local juvenile facilities in Port of Spain, Trinidad. His goal is to go to facilities and schools where he can reach the young people and help them develop a desire to spiritually and positively live their destiny.
K-one has had his share of performing in secular clubs, such as Webster Hall alongside Bedstuy Mafia, music pioneer Freedom Williams of C&C Music Factory and R&B sensation Alka Bulan. He also opened shows for Jamaican Reggae artist Taila Bingi alongside Jamaican reggae band Keith Senior, The Bomb Squad and many more. K-one soon realized that this was not his calling. There was an emptiness inside him and he knew his purpose was more than just singing.
K-one's first project, "Changes" was completed in 2004. The name change indicates a total 360 degree turn, a change from old to new. A change that can only come about or be made by the hands of God.
K-one's second project called "Someone To Love" was written to let young people who have been hurt and looking in all the wrong places for love know that they have true love in God and that man may disappoint them, but God's love is unconditional.
K-one is currently living in Brooklyn, NY. Over the years he performed at a lot of local youth rallies and concerts in New York City.
